Flight testing is conducted in completely different atmosphere from that at manufacturing plant and involves many different associated problems; it is difficult to schedule airliner for test work when it is in demand for line service and scheduled maintenance work; at present, Air Canada's fleet of airplanes numbers 86, requiring maximum possible total of 250 test flying hr/yr; responsibility for technical flying is assigned to one Captain, known as Flight Test Engineer-Pilot who conducts test flights and augments this with pilot duties on line flights; some of problems involved and effect it can have on safety and economy.
