Present state of art indicates that CAT in thermally stable environment, such as stratosphere or stable layer of jet stream front in upper troposphere, is caused by gravity waves forming under vertical wind-shear which break down into random isotropic turbulence; in alleviating effects of CAT on air traffic, several approaches are studied to examine their feasibility; they comprise improvement of forecasting techniques development of in-flight remote detectors, ground-based remote CAT detectors, and CAT Surveillance from Satellites by means of detectors.
