Vehicle for deep-sea research is being built by Westinghouse Underseas Div, Baltimore, under technical exchange license with J.Y. Cousteau and OFRS (Office Francals de Recherches Sous-Marines) of Marseilles, France; Deepstar is designed to carry crew of three to depths of 4000 ft for periods up to 24 hr; it is powered by two 4 1/2-hp battery-operated electric motors; vehicle is 13×7× 11 1/2 ft over fairing; pressure hull is of HY80 steel.
