Concept of onboard support equipment (OSE) is proposed which would eliminate need for most of umbilicals during ground checkout and make it easier to keep remaining ground support equipment (GSE) compatible with everchanging vehicle; schematic illustration of change from GSE to OSE is shown together with performance diagram of OSE; assessment of cost tradeoffs shows that use of OSE leads to savings of $115 million (or 16%) on checkout, GSE, and launch operations costs for 15-yr program covering 125 launches; hardware demonstration unit has been constructed and its operation is explained.
