In mineral aggregates as applied to sewage-disposal practice, both trickling filter and contact beds are considered; consideration of factors affecting life and behavior of disposal media such as handling, placements, climate, plant life, etc.; treatment of aggregates as railroad ballast is based on survey of experience of railway engineers with several commonly used ballast materials such as broken stone, gravel, slag, cinders, burnt clay, etc.
