Two groups of ties manufactured, one from ordinary steel and other from steel containing 0.5% of copper were tested at five places on British Railways; copper-bearing steel found to be between 20 and 70% better than mild steel; resistance of steel ties to rusting considered adequate, but it can be increased for ties laid in open by using copper bearing steel.
