Future helicopter requirements dictate need for improved propulsion system in terms of lower specific fuel consumption and mission effective decreases in propulsion system weight; paper shows magnitude of engine improvements which can result from incorporation of advanced technology with particular emphasis on variable turbine applied to regenerated free turbine engine; incorporation and development of high temperature turbine component technology for regenerated and nonregenerated turbine type turboshaft engines is stressed.
