Liquid and solid propellant rockets, systems using nuclear energy sources, arc heating rockets, magneto-plasma devices, ion rocket propulsion, solar heating rockets, and solar sails are discussed; engine performance requirements for different missions; comparison of systems on basis of performance, environmental characteristics, vehicle requirements, reliability, etc; it is concluded that electrical rockets are superior for long time flight; chemical rockets are satisfactory for applications in "near" space.
