Influence of runway conditions on take-off and landing distances of airplanes, aggravated since introduction of jet aircraft, have been investigated by means of various tests and calculations; at high ground speeds, precipitation on runway changes value of tire-to-surface coefficient and may increase drag in consequence of forces necessary for fluid displacement; hydrodynamic forces acting on wheels running through slush or water can, at high speeds, lift tires completely off ground; report presents survey of most recent investigations; appropriate safety precautions to protect aircraft agaist these risks are discussed.
