Theoretical and experimental studies have shown substantial potential of supersonic combustion with simple engine configuration, i.e. scramjet; description of 50-Mw hypersonic wind tunnel constructed within U S Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory (AFFDL) initially designed for research in hypersonic aerodynamic heating; need for research on hydrogen-burning supersonic combustion engine led to augmenting scope of 50-Mw facility, permitting testing of engines under conditions simulating Mach 6 to 12 cruise-flight condition; scramjet structural aspects are outlined.
