Paper attempts to forecast advanced engine technologies being developed which will provide substantial reductions in DOC (direct operating cost) for commercial aircraft; technologies include high-temperature turbines, light weight structures including new materials, high cycle pressure ratio, regenerators, and low drag engine/airframe installation techniques; it is concluded that efforts in these areas can be expected to decrease current DOC levels by minimum of 20%, and perhaps as much as 30%.
