Paper discusses aircraft control power requirements provided by lift fan systems; aircraft control is obtained during VTOL mode and transition by thrust spoiling louver system which has fast transient response to pilot or autostabilizer commands but is inefficient because it requires that part of available lift be spoiled; gas power transfer is described and estimated performance presented and performance comparison is made between two systems; use of gas power transfer can significantly reduce lift loss due to aircraft control requirements and shows advantage for aircraft having gross weights above 10,000 lb; thrust spoiling is acceptable for light aircraft.
