Examination of some characteristics in order to understand reasons that underly landing and takeoff performance of conventional airplane and helicopter; current VTOL aircraft; need for family of bypass engines having higher bypass ratios when used with lower speed aircraft; development should be directed toward higher turbine inlet temperature and geometry variations in fan and turbine; approach recommended to horizontal attitude aircraft in which thrust direction only is varied.
