Various means of improving braking situation on existing and new cars are offered, including quick service valves, high-friction composition brake shoes, and truck-contained foundation brake gear; increased braking ability requirements are analyzed; it is demonstrated how longer freight-train stop distances mean longer signal-block distances, which can reduce traffic capacity.
