Analysis of economics of Eastern Air Line's operations shows that rising costs involve ground-handling of passengers, "aircraft stopping costs" and line-haul costs of flying airplane at cruising altitude from one city to another; due to complexities of fare structure and such new passenger conveniences as credit, average length of reservation telephone calls has gone up 45% in last 5 yr; it is proposed that in light of rising, irreversible costs of ground operations, fare structure for long- and short-haul operations should be revised, and STOL systems essential to expansion of national air transport be developed.
