Reasons for failure of present four-speed transmissions to give satisfaction; stress is laid on need of reducing maximum engine speed while at same time maintaining or improving overall car ability; describes fourspeed transmission by which gasoline consumption, as indicated by road tests, is said to show saving of 20 per cent.
