Empirical equation relating load to inflation pressure involves exponent n to which Tire and Rim Assn has assigned value of 0.585 for all tires other than those for passenger cars; experiments on several sizes of military tires from different manufacturers suggests value of 0.7 is more reasonable to maintain constant deflection; surface temperature measurements on test wheel using radiometers with PbS and InSb photoconductive sensors show that failure occurs at lugs where temperature is highest; thus, IR is promising tool for predicting premature failure due to hidden defects.
