Study was carried out of process in which solid-propellant combustion is terminated by rapid drop in pressure; experimentally, propellant burning in small rocket motor was subjected to rapid pressure drop when auxiliary nozzle was suddenly opened; results were compared to predictions of theoretical model, based on assumption that extinction occurs when heat absorption by solid propellant exceeds heat transfer to solid propellant from combustion gas; theoretical predictions agreed well with experimental results gathered in program and those by other investigators.
