Measurements indicate doppler signal return from aircraft includes airframe line that may be as narrow as few hertz or as wide as 100 Hz, depending on aircraft size, speed, and aspect angle; spectrum also contains lines (caused by rotating machinery) that may at times be larger than airframe line and appear to contain significant fraction of total received energy; these lines may cause false detections to be made by modern range-gated filter band pulse-doppler radars in which detection occurs when spectral component exceeds preset threshold in one filter of contiguous filter bank.
