Although mechanical shock test machine is usually used to determine whether equipment is rugged enough for service in field, uncertainties involved in choice of test level result in unsatisfactory test criteria; shortcomings of engineering judgment; paper proposes use of statistical decision theory which provides technique and criterion for choosing best source of action from group of possible actions on basis of information available; how method can be applied to selection of test levels is shown.
