Study made by Gen Elec Co indicates that experimental solar thermionic power system, operating at 5% efficiency with 55-w output, could be placed in orbit within 2 to 2 1/2 yr; system, which would weigh less than 200 lb might ride as piggyback payload aboard Thor-Agena-type booster; during orbital injection, system would separate from main payload and operate as independent vehicle; preliminary design calls for cavity-type generator containing 4 or 5 cesium-vapor thermionic converters; design details.
