Life expectancy curves of ocean-going single screw vessels with 1500 shp or more, groups including "Mariner" type vessels and ships fitted with oversize tailshafts, and vessels in Great Lakes service; problem of propellers lost at sea is reviewed; means suggested for improving life expectation are stress relief groove in shaft at big end of taper, cold working shaft surface, increased pullup of propeller on taper during assembly, "spooning" and shortening keyway in shaft, increased stiffness and full structural continuity in hull abaft after peak bulkhead, skew in propeller blades, etc.
