Supersonic machines of Bell and Douglas; Bell X-1 (originally XS-1) flew in early part of 1947; chief disadvantage was its general inflexibility; fastest Bell of all is X-2, powered by Curtiss XLR-25 rocket motor, thrust of which is controllable by throttle; joint Douglas/Navy work began with turbojet D.558-1 Skystreak, straight winged aircraft which set up world speed record of 650 mph in 1947; latest Douglas is Air Force/Navy/NACA X-3.
