Work of Prandtl and Betz on airfoil and airscrew theory encouraged Deutsche Werft to design number of marine screws in light of theory, and have them tested in Hamburg Tank; tests made to determine efficiency of new 3-bladed screw and normal 3-bladed screw showed improvement in favor of former of 7 per cent; however, behind ship, efficiency was reduced by half; similar work was carried out on 2-bladed screw intended to work with high-speed engine. See brief translated abstract in Mar. Engr. and Motorship Bldr., vol. 49, no. 592, Dec. 1926, p. 472.
