Significance of acoustic gains and losses to problem of rocket motor stability and progress made toward understanding of loss mechanisms; with respect to acoustic gains, burning surface of propellant is recognized to be principal source of acoustic amplification, and efforts are directed towards determination of propellant response function; theoretical unpublished calculations indicate that under some conditions radiation may exert important influence on acoustic response of burning surface, especially at low burning rates; nature of new calculations and some of numerical results.
