Chuffing is defined as good combustion momentarily followed by combustion period at near-atmospheric pressure; LF nonacoustic instability (LFI) is combustion anomaly similar to chuffing; in current LFI and chuffing program, literature survey and data review obtained from experiments are bases for working theory and experiments to evaluate various aspects; progress report concludes that chuffing and LFI in composite-modified double-base (CMDB) propellant systems are interpreted to be initiated through condensed phase thermal explosion mechanism; experimental data are shown to obey theory developed on basis of this mechanism.
