Developments in aeroelasticity during past 10 yr; as result of steadily increasing Mach number aerodynamic derivatives have changed, and in some cases brought new problems, and design for higher Mach numbers has led to thinner airfoils and more slender fuselages for which required stiffness is more difficult to provide; merits of stiffness, damping and mass balance for prevention of control surface flutter.
