Steam turbines for marine propulsion must fulfill technical requirements of very high standard; main requirements of shipping lines and classification societies are very long life expectancy for propulsion machinery, modest steam consumption, light weight construction, small space requirements, easy operation and little maintenance; particular constructional problems arise in reduction gears, due to large difference in number of revolutions of propeller compared to that of turbine; solutions to problem.
