At DLR we are researching toward concepts and HMI prototypes for joint driver-automation system design. One of the design ideas we are evaluating is to integrate feedback from certain amount of assistance and automation functions under the roof of ambient stimuli. As theoretical background we are using Lewin’s field theory with the ideas of gradual and directional valences and the congruency of internal and external factors (affordances [Gibson]) in motivational process as action determinant. We define our design goal in achieving that congruency by using gradual action-oriented ambient stimuli. In order to apply this theoretical concept for development of a concrete joint driver-automation system we developed a 360° ambient visual display and an action-oriented taxonomy of semantics for ambient visual stimuli, which should be well understood by drivers in the corresponding situational context. This taxonomy using the ambient display were tested in a usability experiment.
