Abstract The paper examines the spatial pattern of intra-urban freight transportation in Lagos metropolis, Nigeria, using detailed data from a comprehensive field survey. The application of R-mode factor analysis with varimax rotation results in the extraction of four relevant factors which account for 89% of total explained variance. Each dimension of the factor solution was interpreted as a freight traffic sub-region wherein a group of intra- metropolitan traffic zones exhibit a high degree of similarity in the way they assemble their freight. A graph theoretic approach further shows that freight flows are structured through a zonal organisation which is hierarchical when the volume of freight flows are used as a measure of functional linkage. Some planning implications of the results are discussed.
