Abstract Since traditional serial (von Neumann-) computer architecture seems to be unable to achieve ionogram data reduction in real time it is proposed to use a computing system with parallel architecture. It is important in this context to distinguish three fundamental levels (time intervals): t1 corresponding to the pulse recurrence frequency = time inside which echo information is obtained once; t2= time during which the sounding frequency remains sensibly constant so that echoes are comparable; t3= frame period = time in which a full ionogram is obtained.
