Abstract VHF radar measurements of ionization irregularities in the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) at Thumba (dip 0.5°N) for a morning counter electrojet (CEJ) indicate significant decrease in height and time structures of type I phase velocity. For this event, the influence of neutral winds and density gradients to the observed velocity changes have been studied. The absence of turbulence-related type II irregularities together with the presence of westward electric field points that electron density gradient length is positive and small, giving rise to decrease of type I velocity by about 20%. The possible causes that modify the observed velocity from the normally expected ion-acoustic velocity threshold are discussed.
