AbstractA new experimental method is introduced for measuring the mixing enthalpies of metallic alloying systems, involving the merging of two samples in the electromagnetic field of a levitation coil. The heat of solution is calculated from the temperature effect pyrometrically and continuously measured during the alloying process and the known heat capacities of the metals. The applicability of the method was tested with the systems niobium-silicon and molybdenum-silicon. The error of the method was checked by comparing the experimental results of the system Mo-Mo with their theoretically calculated values. This method is especially applied for high melting alloy systems for which conventional measurements falled so far.
