Abstract The observations and interpretation of the time lags between hard and soft X-ray spectral bands that were recently discovered in QPO sources are reviewed. The time lags occurring in the fast QPO (quasi-periodic oscillations) associated with the “horizontal branch” X-ray spectral state probably can be satisfactorily explained by inverse Compton scattering of the X-rays in a hot cloud around the source. However, for the time lags that have been seen in the slow QPO associated with the “normal branch” spectral state and in the Rapid Burster, alternative models may be preferable.
