Abstract This paper defines the solutal stability conditions to be satisfied by a metallic alloy in order to avoid transport measurement disturbances induced by natural convection. It would seem that most systems are subjected to convection movements due to their solutal instability and/or to the inevitable radial temperature gradients. In solutal stabilising systems these convection-induced movements become negligible compared to the diffusion-induced movement of species when a sufficient concentration can be obtained (several % for most systems). When these conditions cannot be satisfied, microgravity experiments would appear to be the only means available for obtaining valuable thermodiffusion measurements.
