AbstractSpace-based microgravity (μg) research tends to be complex, expensive, and time-consuming. But μg-experiments also can be conducted for limited periods of time using ground-based facilities, which have been developed both to gain new knowledge and to prepare experiments for research in space. EUROTUBE-SAAR, the proposed drop shaft near Saarbrücken (W.-Germany) will be able to make substantial contributions in these fields, offering the microgravity community and interested users a versatile and cost-effective μg-facility. EUROTUBE-SAAR will be an integral part of a center for research under microgravity (CESaar), combining the operational advantages of a ground-based facility with remarkable μg-durations (≈14 seconds) and quick turn-arounds. The paper presents the drop shaft's technical and operational concept and realization schedule.
