Abstract The question of electron re-acceleration in radio jets after their leaving the central power house in the compact cores of the radio galaxies is one of the problems at the heart of the physics of extragalactic radio sources. A very promising scheme is linear mode conversion of MHD surface waves, generated by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability into kinetic bulk waves, because it provides a possibility to energize the plasma in the whole body of the jet. In our paper, in contrast to previous treatment, a more general model of this process is used, i.e. we do not limit ourselves to the linear profile approximation, which is certainly oversimplified, but consider instead a weakly inhomogeneous, smoothly and steadily increasing but otherwise arbitrary profile. Computation of the dissipated power in the frame of the ideal MHD already gives the needed orders of magnitudes.
