AbstractA polar cap absorption took place on 12 August 1989 during a D-region experiment by the EISCAT UHF radar, having been first detected by the GOES-7 satellite. It is possible, with certain assumptions, to invert the electron density profiles determined by EISCAT and estimate the particle flux as a function of energy — i.e. the proton energy spectrum, at the top of the atmosphere. The EISCAT data is examined in this way; in later work the results will be compared with the satellite-measured proton fluxes.
