Abstract Anisotropy of electron temperature was detected by means of three planar probes which were installed on the polar orbiting satellite ‘OHZORA’. Generally, the electron temperature parallel to the geomagnetic line of force, T∥, is higher than the electron temperature which is perpendicular to the geomagnetic line of force, T⊥. The anisotropy appears more often in the high latitude. The precipittion pattern of electrons and ions seems to be related to the degree of anisotropy. A simple theoretical study carried out so far shows that parallel electric field and beam component can not explain the anisotropy.
