Details of Some Components Used for Subsidiary Services in Aircraft, Missiles and Space Vehicles. The gimbal of the Smiths 300 series miniature rate gyro is supported by two Hoffmann precision miniature angular contact bearings. These bearings have an outside diameter of 8 mm. and a bore of 2.5 mm. Performance requirements for these bearings are unusual in so far that the time between overhaul of the gyro is required to be between 3,000 and 10,000 operating hours. Yet depending upon the particular application, the gyro is required to withstand linear accelerations of at least 100 g and has been found to tolerate even higher levels of shock acceleration. This is necessary because the 300 series gyro is a general-purpose instrument utilized in a wide variety of control and instrumentation systems in such diverse vehicles as aircraft, tanks, space-probe rockets, helicopters, ships and free-fall aero-dynamic research models.
