THIN cylindrical shells stiffened at intervals along their length by internal frames or bulkheads are often used in fuselage design. When such shells are pressurized or heated, expansion of the shell results and, unless the subsequent deformations of shell and stiffeners are equal, discontinuity stresses are induced in the region of the shell-stiffener joint making all the deformations compatible.
