Abstract It is known to run cables throughout a building as it is being constructed, or as a retro-fit exercise. A problem with large building towers is that they often require long spans of heavy-duty cable for delivering electrical or communications services throughout the tower. It is an object of a preferred form of the invention to go at least some way towards addressing this by way of a cable feeder comprising a cable receiving mechanism 6 and a motor powered drum 1 where the cable receiving mechanism is adapted for receiving incoming cable 4 and directs it to coil around the drum. The arrangement is such that the drum can be driven by the motor 3 to play out the cable at an exit and the cable receiving mechanism is formed to detect a trailing end of the cable and clamp it to prevent it from proceeding to the drum.
