The invention relates to a detection method of a lift traction machine brake, belongs to the field of manufacturing of lifts, and provides a fault detection system of the lift traction machine brake and the detection method of the system. The technical scheme is the system for detecting faults of the lift traction machine brake. The system comprises a brake, a traction machine, a lift car, a lift traction machine driver for providing or transmitting power, and an encoder for detecting the operation movement of a lift; the lift traction machine driver is further used for storing a braking moment critical value of the lift traction machine brake and testing a current braking moment of the lift traction machine brake when the testing lift idles; the encoder is also used for detecting a rotation state of the lift traction machine. Whether the lift traction machine brake has the faults or not can be detected in time and reliably, the safety operation of the lift is guaranteed and the security coefficient of the lift is improved.
