This invention provides a computer-implemented method and a system for evaluation of the performance of a ship. In the method, one or more performance variables of a ship and dynamic input parameters that affect to the performance variables are defined. The dependencies between the performance variables and the dynamic input parameters are then learned automatically by means of computing. An initial model for simulating the performance of the ship is created by means of said dependencies between the performance variables and the dynamic input parameters in said initial model. Measurement results from sensors are obtained during the operation of the ship for producing a set of new dynamic input parameters to be used in the model instead of the foregoing input parameters used in said initial model. The initial model is updated to be used as the model in further operation and further updating the model until the model meets preset quality criteria for a model to be used. The updated model is used to analyze the impact of a given input parameter to one or more of the performance variables. The invention is also concerned with a system and a computer program for performing such a method.
