In the present invention, individual brake devices exhibit sufficient braking performance using fewer parts. A device for stopping an elevator in an emergency is provided with a row of multiple vertically arranged braking devices (4a-4d) to the right and left of an ascending/descending body (1), the braking devices (4a-4d) having a braking element (41, 42) capable of sliding on a guide rail (2). The braking devices (4a-4d) press the braking element (41, 42) to the guide rail (2) when the elevator is detected to be traveling at excessive speed or in other instances, and brake the ascending/descending body (1) using frictional force. The gap (L1) between the guide rail (2) and the braking element (41) of the upper braking devices (4b, 4d) in a standby state is less than the gap (L2) between the guide rail (2) and the braking element (42) of the lower braking devices (4a, 4c).
