The present invention decreases the stroke of an input piston relative to brake fluid pressure in a master cylinder provided with an input piston and an output piston. An input piston (22) that is connected to a brake pedal (26) and an output piston (24) that increases the fluid pressure of a pressurizing chamber (28) as a result of forward travel are fitted to a telescopic mechanism and an engagement spring (72) is provided therebetween. The output piston (24) uses the fluid pressure of a back surface chamber (15) to shrink the engagement spring (72) and is made to travel forward relative to the input piston (22). As a result of the set load of the engagement spring (72) being decreased, the output piston (24) is made to travel forward relative to the input piston (22) during an initial brake operation period, and it is possible to decrease the stroke of the input piston (22) until the fluid pressure of brake cylinders (12FL, FR) reaches a first set pressure.
