In a method for operating an converter (1) with at least one converter module (2), which comprises a primary switch circuit (3) to be connected to a power network (7), a secondary switch circuit (4) to be connected to a load (17), and an intermediately connected intermediate power circuit (5) with an intermediate circuit capacitance (22), the intermediate circuit voltage (Uz) that drops along the intermediate circuit capacitance (22) is set to a determined desired voltage value (U0, U01-U03) by controlling the primary switch circuit (3). The desired voltage value (U0, U01-U03) is variably determined depending on the direction of the power flow of the secondary switch circuit (4).
