The invention relates to a gas spring and an engine hood unit with the gas spring. The gas spring is provided with a center longitudinal axis; a first end portion; a cylinder filled with fluid; a piston arranged in the cylinder that divides the cylinder into a first cylinder chamber and a second cylinder chamber; and a piston rod arranged at the piston, penetrating the second cylinder chamber and guided out of the cylinder at a second end opposite the first end through a guiding and sealing device sealing mode coaxially with an intermediate longitudinal axis, wherein a catch element having at least one spring tongue is arranged at the first end for insertion together with the catch element into an upper tube that locks into a recess associated with it in the cover tube; the cylinder is configured to move along the intermediate longitudinal axis relative to the upper tube when at least one spring tongue is locked in the recess.
