The invention relates to a motor-free balance supporting rod which is used for braking the pivoting movement of a closure member selectively and includes a housing connected to one of the closure member and a motor vehicle body and an extendable member slidably movable relative to the housing and connected to the other of the closure member and the motor vehicle body. The extendable member has a rotational drive member configured to drive a driven member and move the extendable member between a retracted position and an extended position, a gearbox unit has an input portion operably driven bythe rotational output of a rotational drive member and an output portion operably driven in response to the movement of the input portion. The output portion is secured to a friction plate configuredfor operative association with a brake rotor. An electromechanical actuator is operable to move a brake rotor into and out of the braking engagement with the friction plate to establish a braked stateand a non-braked state of a stretchable member.
