The present disclosure provides a battery thermal management system for providing improved battery cooling according to vehicle speed. The present disclosure details a thermal management system for thermal management of an electrically powered vehicle battery pack. An example battery thermal management system may monitor availability and effectiveness of a heat sink to thermally manage a battery pack. The control unit may be configured to actuate the valve from the open position to the closed position when a coolant temperature of the coolant exceeds the modified ambient temperature, thereby preventing flow of the coolant to the radiator. The modified environment temperature can be obtained according to the vehicle speed.
